Plant Protection Officer

We seek an experienced individual to manage and co-ordinate regulatory programs to prevent the entry, establishment and spread of plant pests and diseases in the Cayman Islands.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Knowledge & Experience:

The post holder must have M.Sc. in Plant Protection, Entomology or Plant Pathology with 3 years’ experience’, OR B.Sc. in Agriculture/Science with at least 7-10 years’ experience in a plant related discipline (Plant Protection, Entomology or Plant Pathology).

  • Understanding of phytosanitary systems/processes and good working knowledge of the IPPC regulatory framework
  • Competency and experience in conducting Pest Risk Assessments (PRA’s)
  • Sound taxonomic skills with regards to identification of plant pest (arthropod) and disease to Order/Genera level
  • Sound knowledge of the Integrated Pest Management (IMP) approach for pest management, including pesticide use, handling and an ability conduct appropriate training in this area.
  • The post holder should be able to perform his/her duties with a high degree of independence and minimal supervision.
  • Good oral and written communication skills as well as a high degree of computer literacy are also required.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Overall management of the Department’s Diagnostic Laboratory:
  • o Inventory management, preparation, update laboratory manuals and procedures

    o Conduct laboratory examinations, preliminary taxonomic identification of plant pests

  • Conduct Pest Risk Assessments on the importation of fresh agricultural produce and aggregate materials into the Cayman Islands
  • Oversee national surveillance, control and/or eradication programmes for quarantine pests and design, implement and evaluate pest surveys
  • Provide oversight of the operations of the Agricultural Health Inspection Services
  • Conduct routine & request extension visits to farm, backyard gardens and government or non-government organisations
  • Conduct problem solving research into plant pests and diseases management
  • Prepare technical information (technical papers, brochures, posters) for display/dissemination to the farmers, special groups, the general public through Agriculture shows, schools, lectures, workshop, field days or farm tours.
