The newly renovated and refurbished Bodden Town Library and Learning Centre will officially open its doors this weekend, much to the delight of local residents. The official re-opening, which takes place on Saturday 20th January at 3:00pm at the Library, will give residents an opportunity to tour the facility and familiarize themselves with many of the enhancements which have been added during reconstruction. Perhaps the most significant difference is the addition of a learning centre and activity room, which houses eight computer terminals, each with internet access. Whilst this will provide students with improved access to the tools they need to conduct research and complete homework assignments, the learning centre itself will primarily be used for a wide range of specially coordinated after school activities. Hon.Alden McLaughlin, Minister with responsibility for libraries in the Ministry of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture, who will be present at the opening along with other ministry officials said "Bodden Town library was severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Ivan but with the aid of magnanimous gestures of support from members of the community, particularly Mr. Robert Watler of Watler's Metal Products who donated the standing seam hurricane rated roof, we have been able to restore the structural integrity of the building and still preserve its traditional marine architecture. Not only is the building now as good as new, the addition of the new learning centre is a significant enhancement, which I hope students and residents in the local area will make full use of." Another benefit for residents is the library's opening hours, which have been changed to better suit the needs of the local community. Director of Public Libraries Benedicta Conolly said "the library will now be open to the public on Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays from 10:00am to 1:30pm and will reopen in the afternoon from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. On Wednesday we open from 9:00am till noon and again from 1:00pm till 5:30pm, and on Fridays our opening hours are from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Given that we would like to give everyone an opportunity to take full advantage of the services now on offer, the library will also open on Saturdays from 9:00am till 1:00pm." More than 60% of the reading materials which were lost two years ago have now been replaced and the selection in many areas has been increased, making the library's grand re-opening a cause for celebration on many fronts. All members of the general public are invited to join the local community in Bodden Town to share in this much anticipated auspicious occasion.
