Summer Employment programme

The Department of Employment Relations (DER) is once again embarking on a Summer Employment programme for students aged between 14 and 22 years. The Programme, which commenced in 2002 encourages local businesses to support to the youth of Cayman by offering them an opportunity to benefit from work experience placements during the Summer holiday. Acting Director at the DER, Mr. Philip J. Scott stated When we first launched this programme, it proved to be very popular with local businesses and students alike, and it was gratifying to see 164 students receiving valuable work experience. In addition to having something positive to do during the school holidays, students were also able to earn a little money and make a positive contribution to a range of organisations. In order to participate in the programme, employers must be able to commit to employing at least one student for a period of between four to six weeks. Ms. Jean Solomon, Employment Development Outreach Coordinator commented that the programme is one of the few things available these days that provides a win-win situation. This kind of experience is vital in helping students to form decisions about their future careers, she stated and being in a workplace environment surrounded by constructive role models, helps them to develop a positive mental attitude. Consequently, as both the employer and the student derive significant benefit, I am hopeful that many more businesses will take part this year and support this worthwhile programme. I am inviting Employers and Directors in the Public and Private Sector to register positions which will be available through the summer holidays with the Department of Employment Relations to accommodate as many placements as possible.
