The tender package for construction management services for the Clifton Hunter and John Gray campuses will be advertised this week, according to a statement from the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment. Education Minister, the Hon. Rolston Anglin, advised that this is a critical step forward in his Ministry's overall strategy for the recommencement and completion of the new schools project. "Once appointed, the construction manager will assume responsibility for managing the trade contractors and the day-to-day construction activities at both sites, which will, at that point, be increased to levels necessary to complete the projects," he stated. "This is also an important development for the local construction industry, as it comes at a time when construction companies are hurting and many Caymanians in the industry are seeking employment." The Minister further explained that a comprehensive tender package has been prepared, and that the goal is to tender and award construction management services during the next 6 to 8 weeks. At this stage it is projected that construction work at both sites will be completed and the new schools occupied by the 2011 school year. Work on the new schools sites commenced in a limited way in January 2010, when the Ministry of Education advised that negotiations had been completed successfully with three major sub-contractors, to undertake work that was necessary and critical to preserve warranties and to mitigate costs going forward. Minister Anglin also announced that an agreement had been reached between the mechanical, electrical and plumbing ("MEP") sub-contractor on the projects, to enable this critical aspect of the work to be ramped up. "Ongoing negotiations with the other key existing sub-contractors are another important part of the Government's overall strategy, so I am pleased that our negotiations have concluded successfully with this sub-contractor," he stated.
