General

1. The University of the West Indies is a regional institution serving the following contributing countries in the West Indies:

2. The University has campuses at Cave Hill in Barbados, Mona in Jamaica and St. Augustine in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The total student body, which numbers over 35,000, is distributed among the various Faculties on these campuses. The Faculties are Humanities & Education, Law, Pure & Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and School of Clinical Medicine & Research at Cave Hill; Humanities and Education (including an Institute of Education), Medical Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences, and Social Sciences at Mona; and Engineering, Humanities & Education, Medical Sciences, Science & Agriculture and Social Sciences at St. Augustine. The University also has University Centres, each with a Resident Tutor, in the contributing countries.
3. The University of the West Indies is now a dual mode institution, providing face-to-face instruction as well as programmes by Distance Education. Members of the academic staff may be called upon to deliver teaching in either mode and to assist in the preparation of the course material for the Distance Education mode.

The School of Continuing Studies

4. The School of Continuing Studies is responsible for the University’s outreach activity through programmes of continuing education, public education and adult education in all contributing countries. Its programmes seek to enhance academic, professional and vocational skills for persons outside the formal structures of the university and to provide opportunities for them to pursue further education, including higher education. SCS also focuses on the development and nurturing of cultural knowledge and skills and the provision of research and technical assistance in specialised areas. Where there is no Registry in country, the staff of the School assure the delivery of university programmes in distance mode in collaboration with the UWI Distance Education Centre and the faculties of the University.
5. The work of the School currently involves the following activities.
   • The offer of UWI associate degree programmes developed by the School
   • The offer of programmes of professional and vocational development certified by the School itself or by other recognised certifying agencies;
   • The offer of programmes leading to fulfilment of university entrance requirements;
   • The stimulation of public discourse on matters pertinent to the country of location and to the Caribbean by organizing relevant seminars, fora, conferences, lectures and discussions, hosting appropriate visitors;
   • The provision of technical assistance to governments and national and international institutions;
   • The stimulation of cultural and artistic activities; and
   • Facilitation of the delivery of UWI programmes.

The Cayman Islands Centre

8. The Cayman Islands Centre is located in Grand Cayman and caters to students pursuing UWI programmes by distance and the Diploma in Youth in Development Studies. Adjustment to the scope of programmes is under discussion in the light of an overall review of the University’s operations regionally.

Duties of Appointee

9. The Resident Tutor in the Cayman Islands will be based in Grand Cayman at offices on the grounds of the University College of the Cayman Islands. The appointee will be required to serve the needs of the University in a variety of spheres throughout the entire Cayman Islands. The following is a summary of the duties expected of the appointee.
   • Administer the operations of the Cayman Islands Centre.
   • Promote, organise and administer the programmes of the UWI in the Cayman Islands.
   • Develop and implement programmes in continuing education for adult learners.
   • Undertake research and development activities within his/her competence.
   • Plan and implement public education activities in the Cayman Islands.
   • Stimulate creative arts and cultural heritage activities.
   • Recruit suitable part-time staff to facilitate the delivery of the university’s programmes
   • Facilitate and support the development and activities of the local chapter of the UWI Alumni Association
   • Promote the interests of the UWI and function as the representative of the university for public purposes.
   • Manage and report on the finances of the Centre.
   • Prepare estimates of needs for the Centre.
   • Oversee the work of administrative, technical and service staff appointed to the Centre.
   • Such other duties as assigned by the Director of the School.

Required Qualifications

10. The appointee should have at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline and an aptitude for research and publication.

Tenure of Appointment

11. The appointment will be made for a period of three (3) years in the first instance.
