Teachers Feted

Published 2nd June 2010, 9:41am

Hundreds of teachers turned up for a special reception at Pedro St. James last week (Thursday, 27 May) held in their honour by the Ministry of Education, Training & Employment and the Department of Education Services.

The event closed a month-long series of ministry initiatives designed to raise the profile of education and educators in our community.

The teachers, distinguished guests for the evening, were lauded by His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE; the Premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP; and Minister for Education, the Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP, for their contributions.

Ministers Bush and Anglin even recounted their middle and high school experiences, taking guests down "memory lane."

Noting that teachers are more than just educators, Mr. Anglin said, "You are counsellors, friends, negotiators and sometimes even parents." He added, "Neither government nor the community can do enough to say thanks."

Later that evening, both Ministers Bush and Anglin presented gifts to former teachers.

Also in attendance were Minister for Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP; Education Ministry Chief Officer Mary Rodrigues; Ministry Deputy Chief Officer Christen Suckoo; and Chief Education Officer Shirley Wahler.
